There are some things in this world you simply don't like. Take tomatoes, for example. They're healthy, good for you and are very versatile for cooking. Yet, I wouldn't eat one, as they just aren't my thing. That's the deal with Chasing Elroy's, "Random." I can hear why people like their sound, but it doesn't click for me. I have trouble absorbing the vocal performance and my brain gets pounded in with the excessive double bass thumps going on. It's just too much. But I do like some of the neat guitar effects and some of the songs like "California" have cool breakdown parts, but as a whole, it doesn't get me going, in fact, the songs tend to run into each other and get stale.
Chasing Elroy's influenced by the Dave Matthews Band and in saying that, it helps define the music they play and the audience they seek. The band's had some success on college radio and that's definitely the market I see this band reaching - not your snobby alt-rock-hear-music-before-you kind of college student, more the mass-market-music-is-background-noise kind of college student. In fact, I think these guys are sincere in what they are doing - there's talent and moments of coolness in the music. But like I said earlier, I'm not the guy they are trying to win over because I don't like tomatoes.
