Lazer Forever dub themselves an "anthemic indie-rock" three-piece, but don't expect soaring strings or glass-shattering falsettos. Instead, Lazer Forever relies on jagged riffs, heavy bass lines and drummer Adam Patterson's too-good-for-indie-rock chops to channel the catchy cosmos. Serious tones they have, memorable melodies they do not.
Dustin Tessier and Clint Boylan switch off the lead singing role, with Boylan's voice sounding like Thom Yorke imitating Sublime's Brad Nowell, or vice versa. It's difficult telling the two apart, but Dustin has a more off-kilter voice with a penchant for off-key warbling. Comparisons to recent Minneapolis breakouts Tapes 'n Tapes seem obligatory. But where "The Loon" had a plethora of energy and teenage fun, "Visage Cage" is too rote with a lack of sticky melodies.
Lazer Forever's sound resembles an adult contemporary version of the jagged indie-math style of Circulatory System and Les Savy Fav. The band would probably rather I cite bands like Weezer and Radiohead, but they lack Weezer's (early) goofy personality or Radiohead's strategic experimentation.
See them in the appropriate setting: Live, with cute girls, Sunset Wheat beer and a good view of Adam Patterson's flailing arms.
