Nic Garcia - The Desperate Ones
by Jenny Newgard

Picture this: A young man, armed with only an acoustic guitar, singing into the winds that sweep the lonesome prairies of North Dakota.

Nothing new, right? An honest shtick we've all seen and heard before.

Nic Garcia could easily fit that profile, but what makes him different, thankfully, is the complete lack of 'sad bastard' in his voice and music. On "The Desperate Ones," his third full-length album and his first on Yer Bird Records out of Charlottesville, VA, Garcia creates a rich acoustic sound filled with a rare contented introspection that makes for perfect listening in a sun-dappled anywhere.

Hey, Nic, aren't you jaded and miserable from those cold Dakota winters? Where do you get off thinking life is beautiful? And yet his meditative, whispery vocals carry on, singing "God bless this place" and "If we fall, it's all right."

Each song on the disc is undeniably pretty and filled with sincerity, but the stand out track, "The Ones Who Waste The Day," is as radio-worthy as anything I've heard this year.
