The Future - Self Titled
by Gentry Boeckel

The Future aren't photographed and they go by names like Steven Evil, Tony Monochrome and Brownson Pinochet III. With little information about the band beyond their sparse tinfoil liner notes, music reviewers are forced to judge the band by their music alone (and we really hate doing that.)

Conclusion: The Future play some some dirty ass goth prog-punk. Lead singer Steven Evil sounds like a depressed Lou Reed playing with The Cramps. Steven has obviously had his fare share of macabre Joyce Carol Oates short stories. Lyrically, he's few and far between, appearing only periodically to inject some sleazy gothness to the otherwise direct prog-punk instrumentation. And he's not subtle either, "I just want to fuck / I wanna go down on you," he sings on the opener "Down On You." The highlight of the album, "Impaled On Yer Luv" has Steven playing the drowsy goth, moaning about footsteps like thunder and coffins for two over a steady sludge riff.

The Future's self-titled album is an appropriate 35 minutes, which works to the bands strengths: three minute bursts of black eye shadow rock.
