The Lid's "Like Walking Through Walls" starts off with a modern alt-guitar riff, then a Duff McKagan-like bass part comes pounding through and it finishes with a big drum intro. It's effective and it works, and that's just the first track, "The Choice." The track continues with solid riffs and tons of breaks and changes. It introduces you to what you can expect for 75 percent of the disc. While the rock may work, it really doesn't compare to the 25 percent that really works. The majority of the disc's hard rocking is good, but nothing out of the ordinary. What is out of the ordinary are the disc's quieter, more sonically dense tracks like "Thinksystem," "For S.A.D." and "Drag."
Maybe I'm getting old, but I just don't get as overwhelmed with the heavy rockers these days as much as I get turned on by the more mellow tracks. "Thinksystem" sounds like a track off Elvis Costello's "When I was Cruel." While the other two have a bit of a Radiohead meets acoustic Foo Fighters vibe, particularly "For S.A.D.," which a back and forth, from mellow to rock, like something off of "The Bends." I wasn't overwhelmingly impressed with Eric Pasi's vocals, but I'm also a guy that likes singers with not so pretty voices and Pasi does have good chops. All in all, "Like Walking Through Walls" is a tight little package, but it's what you don't expect from the band that'll really stick with you.
