Newcomers to the Twin Cities music scene, The Trimmed Hedges are definitely a mysterious band. With songs about "ascending to the soul of the Sun" and other equally atrocious yet enigmatic quips they've managed to make a puzzle that no one cares to solve. Even more mysterious is just exactly where their sound is coming from, at one moment they remind me of an indie-rock Queensryche, and at others, the soundtrack to a Sega Genesis helicopter combat game. It's a totally un-brutal mix of neutered metal break downs and new-age ramblings.
Kudos to the band for putting in a strong effort, they do manage to create continuity throughout most of the E.P., casting a apocalyptic vision throughout all 20 minutes of Abandoned Cities. I believe that given some time to mature as songwriters they will eventually be able to make some compelling work, but until then I'd advise you to skip this outing.
