This World Fair - So Is Death & Love
by David Brusie

This World Fair’s new EP, “So Is Death & Love,” is atmospheric, dreamy and moody, and is combined with a voice that hints of reserved and reluctant vulnerability. While the lyrics are enigmatic, it’s clear the theme of the EP is relationships, though it’s not clear if it’s focused on just one current or several past relationships.

In “Amy,” Chris Kalgren sings “...consider how unlikely we are/we’re the needle in the haystack we are.” A dysfunctional relationship is reflected in the lyrics of “Drama” (“Pour coffee on my dreams...stain my reality...cause everyone knows I’m your pawn and you’re my queen”). “Waiting For You” sounds a whole lot like Atlanta Rhythm Section’s “So Into You” played at an up tempo pace.

“Silicone” is the best track, especially at the intro when it’s stripped down to piano and guitar, with lyrics rife full of contradictory imagery: “Woman, you got the best of me/with the worst of consistency/I’m an arrow pointing to destiny/with precise inaccuracy.”

“So Is Death & Love,” is by no means new or groundbreaking, but it is listenable indie music that could easily get airplay on college or mainstream radio. CM
