Dropping Daylight has been busy. Very busy.
In the last year alone, they've shared the stage with Simple Plan, Jason Mraz, Motion City Soundtrack, Papa Roach and many others. Currently, they're finishing up a West Coast jaunt with Taylor Hawkins of the Foo Fighters.
It's obvious these Minneapolis rockers know how to get the job done and Dropping Daylight never drops an opportunity that comes their way. When asked about what they do in their free time, their response was, "what is 'free time'?"
They've been able to have fun along the way, too. At one point in their career, they displayed their sense of humor by doing a cover of the theme song from the TV show, King of the Hill. Last October, they opened for Jason Mraz at Northrop Auditorium and played for a full house of approximately 4,500.
Even though this talented quartet has had their share of experiences with large venues and huge crowds across the country, their favorite place to play is an unlikely choice: The Java Joint in St. Cloud, MN. This tiny venue/coffee shop cannot comfortably hold more than 150, but it's given Dropping Daylight some of the most memorable and thrilling experiences playing shows.
What is it about this band that gives their music such an honest feel and their live show such an electric atmosphere? One possibility is they way they fuse alternative rock with piano to create a sound unmatched by other groups in Minnesota, not to mention the rest of the country.
They certainly turned heads at Octone Records, a subdivision of Sony/BMG, who will be releasing their full-length album "Brace Yourself" in June 2006. Dropping Daylight will be on the Vans Warped Tour, which stops in Minneapolis on June 18, 2006.
In the next few years, Dropping Daylight plans to be either a successful touring band or homeless on Hennepin Avenue. The way things are going, I don't think you'll see them on the street asking for change anytime soon.
