Bill Geezy & The Promise Breakers are purveyors of a pleasant blend of folk, country and pop music, and their new CD, "Can't Stop Thinkin' 'Bout My Baby," is an excellent showcase for the group's talents.
Vocally, Bill Geezy sounds very similar to Guy Clark, albeit without the Texas twang, his baritone perfectly complemented by Clint Hoover's standout harmonica playing. Hoover's harp often operates as a stand-in for the lap steel player most often associated with this kind of country music, and it's a very nice change of pace.
The first track, "You Never Know," sounds nothing like the majority of the album, although it stands up perfectly fine on its own. This song is full of '50s style doo-wop harmonies, layered with not so subtle shades of Van Morrison's most accessible work. "Wrong Turn Right" is more representative of the band's country/bluegrass sound. It features some fine finger-pickin' guitar work by Dave Bille accompanied by Hoover's chugga-chugga harmonica playing. "Sergio and Cecelia" could easily be a Bruce Springsteen outtake with its melancholy twist on the ever-flowing passage of time.
The remainder of the album continues in the same manner, combining classic elements of country with harmonious pop music. Geezy is an incredibly evocative songwriter, particularly on "Waterslide," in which you can easily imagine an overcrowded northern Minnesota lake resort town in mid-July. Unfortunately, Geezy's narratives never really go anywhere, which is too bad because his words paint such a beautiful background. But this is a minor quibble. Taken as a whole, Geezy and his compatriots do an excellent job with their brand of country music.
