Switchboard - One Track Mind
by Brady O'Rourke

On "One Track Mind," the second release – and second EP – from Switchboard, the group's sound does something interesting – it's simultaneously enjoyable, yet limited by its simplicity.

With simple punk/rock chord progressions and slightly packaged sounding intros you swear you've heard before, they'd appear to have nothing to offer in terms of originality or quality. But it's those same uncomplicated and straightforward riffs that make the disc entertaining. The track "J.M.B" is the clear standout of the album and shows the trouble-free essence of the band very well, especially lyrically. There's nothing spectacular about the line, "You caused a lot of beauty, but you caused a lot of harm," but when lead singer and guitarist Paul McNamee gushes it, he gives it an understood deep meaning that could be taken many ways.

The album is riddled with similar lines, including the chorus of "Positively Lyndale," where McNamee questions, "How long have you been this boring and don't you think it's time to change?" It's really a shame "One Track Mind" isn't a full-length release, because clocking in at only 15 minutes, it's really hard to recommend. But then again, you just might want to pick it up, then hope and pray for a full-length album from this promising band in the near future.
