The cool thing about Radio On's "Stallion's Final Romance" is you don't have to go through a bunch of filler songs to find the stuff that rocks. From the get go, Radio On kicks the doors wide open and keeps them open.
Maybe I'm a sucker for old school rock, but these guys have a definite '70s New York vibe, mixed with a little modern rock, and a good sense of humor and wit. Also, the lo-fi feel of the whole recording is a plus. I hear a lot of polished turds and it's nice to hear a band that sounds raw, real and alive. We've all listened to "Exile on Main Street" and it's the rough edges that won us over.
What's super cool? Track one, "Houston," kicks some serious ass with its straightforward guitar attack and repetitive anchoring phrase of "You can do anything you want in Houston." There's the "Muswell Hillbillies"-esqe track of "Bottles of Wine" and the solid Stones-y riff of "Make My Way" just to name a few. But you also can't miss "Workin'," "Southern Law" or "Whiskey Mountain." Here's the problem: These are my favorites at the moment, get back to me in a month and I'll be in love with a different batch of tracks from this album. Radio On, rock on!
