This month’s cover is Chad Carr’s third for Rift. Carr’s covers are a multi-layered composition that mixes traditional mediums (paint, ink, photos and drawings) and computer created digital effects.
Rift: How long have you been creating art/graphic design?
Chad Carr: I’ve been in the graphic design field for about 10 years.
Rift: What made you decide to make the jump from working for someone else to being your own boss?
CC: I realized making money isn’t really all that great if you don’t have time to enjoy it. Running my own design company gives me the opportunity to make the most of my time, both professionally and personally.
Rift: What’s the hardest part about making a living as an artist/graphic designer?
CC: I guess it’s the same thing that makes it fun, the never ending challenge of creating something visual that has to meet the expectations of another person, or more often, groups of people – and has to meet the assignment objectives in a specific time frame.
Rift: What’s the best part about making a living as an artist/graphic designer?
CC: Besides what I mentioned above, I think it’s that I can go to “work” and still do things I’ve always liked to do, such as drawing and photography. Not to mention being able to "tweak" my work schedule as needed.
Rift: What do you think of the Twin Cities’ art scene?
CC: It’s great. There’s a nice mix of hip galleries popping up all over, which gives artists of all kinds a venue to show their work. I'm fortunate to have a studio in a building that holds art shows periodically.
Rift: Is there anything else you’d like to share about yourself?
CC: Well, I’m kind of a nerd, so I’m glad we have a place like ROBOTlove in our town. Also, we may need an intern. So if anyone out there is interested, send an email to info@c-moto.com
