Javier Trejo - "Self Titled "
by Nelson Heise

This little gem by Javier Trejo takes me back to my college days when things were more carefree and way too intoxicated. Filled with a spacey aura and plenty of room for jam sessions, Trejo delivers something fresh and while he leads the project, Trejo gets some first class help from a handful of top-notch musicians, allowing the disc to go through a series of genres including jam band, modern jazz, blues and pop.

The most tasty treats on the disc are "Just to See Her" and "And in my Bourbon Down." They're very swingy, very jazzy and just tantalizing. A track like "Swimmin' Boy" shows Trejo's blues edge, with its affected distorted guitar, basic percussion and barely audible vocals. The songs "Brand New Day" and "Serious" deliver Trejo's pop sensibility and his consistent positive message. Maybe it was a "right time, right place" kind of deal with me on this disc, but it struck a chord. I needed some mellow and friendly tracks and Mr. Trejo pleased my ears. Plus, I have to give props to the disc design – the CD looks like an LP. I know this trick has been done before, but it really feels appropriate for this body of work. NH
