CD – Review – Popcycle – Yesterday’s Blast

By Katie Schroepfer

Popcycle may very well be Minnesota’s most optimistic pop-rock band out there today, giving hope that the music scene isn’t just surrounding us with pain and hatred towards one another.

The brightness is easily shown with track one of their newly released CD, Yesterday’s Best, “Happy As A Clam,” and ending the album with lyrics such as, “But there is beauty, and everyone’s accountable because we are here and isn’t life a precious thing?” sung in, “So in Conclusion”.

This band strives on success and focuses on the music more than the money intake. Considering the talent they have, they deserve a good gig and a few zero’s added on to their checks for the outstanding sound they produce throughout each song.

Growing since their first album, “Major Changes/ Minor Chords,” Popcycle isn’t just the original pop rock type of band. Their instruments bring out a folk touch and a country feel with the different sounds and vocals making them unique and different than the everyday pop rock band. Each song offers its own sound, making the CD welcoming for a drive or just to relax and enjoy.

This band offers a show that would be complementary after a hard day of work or just a hard day in general for people looking for a band that could brighten their mood on a cloudy day. Nonetheless, a walk in the park would be better fit with the song, “Air (What’s on your mind)” to complete the “Zen” feel of today’s outside world.

Although they have the strength and willpower to continue in the music business producing encouraging music, I don’t find this band to be one that many will know too quickly.

Their horizons need to be broadened and their name has to get out there in more ways, and they may have to realize that selling their music instead of giving it out for free would encourage fans to buy their music and spread their one of a kind sound.

A line up with Death Cab for Cutie may be in the future for this distinctive group. They have the ability to be heard on the radio and to be headlining shows in the near future with their one of a kind album Yesterday’s Blast under their belts.
