CD Review – Seconds Before – Change Is The Only Constant

By Tammy Reese

Rock group Seconds Before has had its share of change over their ten years of existence but this band is out to prove that change is almost always for the better. Seconds Before is literally seconds away from breaking into the big-time with their new album, “Change is the only Constant.” The guitar driven harmonies blend phenomenally with singer Brian Larson’s pure raw talent. Unlike most albums put out into the marketplace this album is beyond cool. The band’s hard work is apparent with each song delivered flawlessly and definitely worth listening to.

Reminiscent of the Goo Goo Dolls, Seconds Before almost appears to be channeling them with songs that sound congruent to the Goo’s “Flat top” and “Long Way Down.” Despite the similarities, Seconds Before is rather quite distinct. A quote from the band’s web Site states, “(the album is) inspired by the highs and lows of life in their hometown, including a sincere reflection on the heroes and victims of the 35W bridge collapse in “Calling Home.”  A heartfelt retrospective into the day that the bridge fell into the Mississippi, despite the tribute to the heroes and victims it is a song that can be taken as just that a tribute or a way to capitalize on such a tragic event. Good news for Seconds Before is that is appears to be just that, a touching, verbally illustrated memorial to those it is meant to commemorate and lift up. The song starts off nicely painting a portrait of the surreal scene that would unfold and goes into an almost indulgent heavy metal-esque guitar rift at the end of the track. The gist of the song comes across and can only be stated as Seconds Before sings, “Now the tale of two cities will never be the same.”

As for Seconds Before continuing onto bigger things than the Twin Cities music scene, that is something to be sure of. Perhaps if like the Goo Goo Dolls just one song of theirs will become all the rage and lead to greater success and even better albums, then so be it. This is one of the best bands that is from the Twin Cities and is sure to make its mark much like that of other great musicians to breakaway from Minnesota.
